About the Role

The Family Support Services Worker position is designed to provide quality, consistent and appropriate services including the supervision of family time, transport, mentoring and family preservation.

Key Position Responsibilities

  • Providing quality and safe services including the supervision of family contacts, ensuring a trauma informed, culturally sensitive approach to the needs of children, young people and their families.

  • Providing safe transport of children and young people, which may include to and from appointments, school, birth family contact or other.

  • Positive role modelling and mentoring for children and young people, ensuring consistent, appropriate and positive activities designed to build resilience and relationships.

  • Assisting in the preservation of families where there is a risk of children and young people coming into care, however there are identified strengths to prevent this happening. This may include assisting with appointments, routines and therapeutic behaviour support.

  • Demonstrating a comprehensive understanding of child development, including knowledge of the context and impact of issues arising from children and young people being removed from their family and significant others.

  • Providing educational support for children during periods of suspension or inability to attend formal education.

  • Working with children and young people to mentor and support growth in areas including social and independent living skills.

  • Providing support to care placements during times of increased instability, with focus on meeting both the child and carers needs.


Selection Criteria

  1. Please outline your qualifications with a minimum of Cert IV in Community Services or 2 years paid employment in a relevant community services field.

  2. Demonstrated or comprehensive awareness of issues that impact children, young people and families in an out of home care setting.

  3. Demonstrated current knowledge and understanding of mentoring processes and role modeling for children and young people.

  4. Demonstrated understanding of the importance of identity and connections for children and young people.

  5. Demonstrated experience and ability to work in situations of conflict and crisis.

  6. Demonstrated adaptable and high-level communication skills, including both verbal and written communication.

  7. Understanding and experience in providing comprehensive written work, including reports and correspondence.

  8. Demonstrated ability to self-motivate and work independently, as well as working cohesively as part of a team.

  9. Willingness to work with in a Christian ethos

  10. Confirmation that you:

a. Hold a current and cleared Working with Children Check

b. Can provide a National Police Check (obtained within the past 12 months)

c. Hold a Full (Unrestricted) Current Drivers Licence

d. Have access to two referees from current or previous Managers

e. Will provide copies of Transcripts and Certificates detailing qualifications

f. Will disclose during interview any information that could impair performance in this position, which should be considered by the panel when assessing applicants.
