Our Clinical team looked at the impact hormones have on ADHD symptoms and ADHD medication. Our research looked at the hormones oestrogen, progesterone, and testosterone, and found that there is correlation between how people experience ADHD symptoms and the ways these hormones fluctuate during different cycles and different life stages.
In particular, the research showed that:
Hormones impact on dopamine (which is important in ADHD).
Oestrogen boosts dopamine availability – potentially improving attention and executive function.
Therefore in low oestrogen phases (before/during menstruation), dopamine reduces and ADHD symptoms worsen.
Therefore this could be hugely impactful for our pre-pubescent and pubescent teens.
